Greetings everyone!

Over the last year, I’ve become increasingly concerned about the polarization that’s tearing apart America and the dehumanizing rhetoric on both sides that has become commonplace.

Jill Long Thompson is a former U.S. Congresswoman from Indiana who served in the 1990s. She represented a heavily Republican district as a Democrat and a fiscal conservative and frequently worked with other legislators across the aisle.

Now, extreme polarization and gerrymandering, the redrawing of district lines for partisan benefit, has made people like her few and far between in Congress, she says.

In this episode, she makes the case for a return to bipartisan cooperation and civil discussion across the political aisle.

She’s the editor of the new book “Across the Aisle: Why Bipartisanship Works for America." It features essays from a number of current and former members of Congress, both Republican and Democrat, and opens with an essay sounding the alarm that is co-written by two former Senator Majority Leaders, Trent Lott, a Republican, and Tom Daschle, a Democrat.
