Geoff Hinsliff, the actor renowned for his role as Don Brennan on Coronation Street, has passed away at the age of 87. Hinsliff, who played the character from 1987 to 1997, died earlier this week. His co-star, Helen Worth, who portrays Gail Platt on the soap, described him as a “lovely, quiet man” who will be greatly missed. Hinsliff’s portrayal of Don Brennan left a lasting impression, as his character became one of the show’s most memorable villains. His storyline involved dramatic moments, including a feud with Mike Baldwin, kidnapping, attempted murder, and ultimately Don’s tragic demise in a car crash. Hinsliff first appeared on Coronation Street in 1963 and again in 1977 as different characters before returning in 1987 for his decade-long run as Don.

In addition to Coronation Street, Geoff Hinsliff enjoyed a prolific acting career that spanned several decades. He appeared in TV series such as Z-Cars, Dixon of Dock Green, The Professionals, and the sci-fi show Doctor Who. He also had roles in films like A Bridge Too Far and performed on stage, notably playing Dr. Astrov in Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya at Leeds Playhouse. Hinsliff continued to take on various roles throughout his career, including a small part in Holby City in 2010.

Born in Leeds in 1937, Hinsliff trained at RADA, graduating in 1960, and soon made his TV debut. He married his wife Judith in 1967, and together they had a daughter, Gaby, who is a journalist for The Guardian. Fans of the soap have expressed their grief on social media, sharing fond memories of his iconic portrayal of Don Brennan, with many calling him a “legend” of Coronation Street.
