'Uncensored America' press conference ahead of event with political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos & Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes, announcement of lawsuit against University of South Carolina

Sean Semanko, founder of the organization ‘Uncensored America’, announced a federal lawsuit while speaking at a press conference today ahead of an event with Milo Yiannopoulos and Gavin McInnes at USC

There have been numerous calls for cancellation of the event, including from South Carolina State Representative Leon Howard and the NAACP. A Change.org petition urging USC President Michael Amiridis and the Board of Trustees to “take steps to modify the name of the event, relocate it from the campus, or consider its total cancellation” has received over 27,000 signatures

A statement from President Amiridis and Board of Trustees Chair Thad Westbrook said “We remain steadfast in safeguarding the First Amendment rights of our students, even when we may be offended by their choices and statements”, and “As a university, we denounce hate and bigotry. We condemn the vile and juvenile rhetoric used to promote this event and reaffirm the aspirational values enumerated in the Carolinian Creed.”

The lawsuit against the university comes following a student government decision denying funding for the event. Semanko stated the event will go forward as planned
