The Great Aurora Storm of 10-11 May 2024

This clip covers the period from 9PM to 3:05AM (10-11 May 24) from Glendo State Park, Wyoming. While aurora continued until dawn, heavy dew coated my lens and I was forced to call it the end of one of the best northern lights display that I have ever witnessed over the past 50 years!

I used my Fujifilm X-T5 in fine mode with a Fujifilm 16-55mm f/2.8 lens at various f-stops. I maintained a steady 10 second exposure throughout with an iso of 1600. This resulted in over 2000 individual frames (taken in electronic shutter mode).

The dSLR provided outstanding resolution, color, contrast over the GoPro10 and GoPro11 action cams I used but I was limited to the wide field equivalent of 24mm.

The space weather charts and animation show what an epic northern light storm this was. Aurora was seen from Puerto Rico and may have been the strongest in 20 to 50 years. Certainly in my 50 years, I may have seen brighter displays in Alaska but none as colorful and structurally dynamic as this one.
