House to vote on Speaker Mike Johnson’s funding plan as shutdown looms

Speaker Mike Johnson announced that the House will vote Wednesday on a six-month stopgap funding bill linked to the SAVE Act, which requires proof of citizenship to register to vote.

This package, which Johnson pulled last week due to GOP opposition, faces a tough path with the House’s narrow Republican majority.

The proposed bill is expected to fail in the Democratic-led Senate and faces a veto threat from President Biden.

Johnson’s plan aims to prevent a government shutdown on Oct. 1, but bipartisan support is lacking.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the strategy as “unworkable” and called for a bipartisan agreement instead, NBC News has reported.
