At 14 years old, Carly Gregg tested positive for marijuana when she arrived at a youth detention center. She was later transferred to Rankin County Jail. On March 18, she admitted to smoking marijuana, and on March 19, she fatally shot her mother, Ashley Smylie, and shot and injured her stepfather. Gregg, who is charged with murder and attempted murder, is being held in solitary confinement at Rankin County Jail. At a court hearing in August, Gregg rejected a plea deal that would have given her a 40-year sentence, choosing to face a possible two life sentences instead.
During the hearing, Gregg, who was 14 at the time and charged as an adult, wore a navy blue plaid school uniform. Circuit Court Judge Dewey Arthur informed her that she faced either two life sentences or up to 93 years if she proceeded with the trial. Gregg acknowledged her understanding and chose to continue with the trial.
Security footage from the garage captured Gregg and her mother arriving home on the day of the shootings. Another camera in the kitchen recorded Ashley going into Gregg's room to remove items while Gregg was outside with the dogs. When Gregg returned inside, she saw her mother in her room and then allegedly went to her mother's bedroom, leaving with her hands behind her back. The footage recorded a gunshot, a scream, and then two additional gunshots. Court testimony revealed that Gregg shot her mother twice in the face and once below the chin.
Gregg then placed a heavy item on the kitchen counter and used her mother’s phone to text her stepfather, pretending to be her mother, to inquire about his arrival time. During the 45 minutes between the shooting and the stepfather's arrival, Gregg invited a friend over, asking if she had ever seen a dead body. She showed her friend her deceased mother and the gun used in the shooting, claiming she had three shots for her mother and three more for her stepfather.
When the stepfather arrived, he was immediately shot in the shoulder by Gregg. They struggled briefly, during which he managed to disarm her. He noted that Gregg's eyes appeared unusually large and that she looked as if she had seen a demon. Gregg then fled, evading capture until she was found by law enforcement about an hour later
