When a small boy goes to stay with his grandparents in Southsea, he is attracted to a Punch-and-Judy show set up on the seafront by Professor Swatchell. As he watches these puppets pay out their traditional fun and games, he begins to realizes that the story played out by these strange, violent wooden puppets is mirroring the events taking place within his own family's life ...
