flavorful spareribs recipe
if you're craving tender, flavorful spareribs, here's a great recipe to make fall-off-the-bone spareribs that are juicy, smoky, and delicious, perfect for a barbecue or oven-baked!
Ingredients:
2 racks pork spareribs (about 4-5 lbs)
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
1 cup barbecue sauce (your favorite brand or homemade)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the ribs:
Remove the membrane: Flip the ribs over so the bone side is facing up. Slide a knife under the thin membrane and pull it off. Removing this helps the ribs become more tender.
Trim excess fat: Trim any excess fat from the ribs for a cleaner, less greasy bite.
2. Make the rub:
In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using).
Rub olive oil all over both sides of the ribs, then generously sprinkle the dry rub over the ribs, pressing it into the meat for maximum flavor. Cover and let the ribs sit for at least 30 minutes (or overnight in the fridge for deeper flavor).
3. Cooking method options:
Option 1: Oven-Baked Ribs:
Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 275°F (135°C) for low and slow cooking.
Wrap the ribs: Place the ribs on a large sheet of aluminum foil, meat side up. Wrap them tightly to seal in moisture. Place the wrapped ribs on a baking sheet.
Bake the ribs: Cook the ribs in the oven for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until they’re tender and the meat easily pulls away from the bone.
Add barbecue sauce: After the ribs are done baking, carefully open the foil and brush your favorite barbecue sauce over the ribs. Increase the oven temperature to 400°F (200°C) and bake the ribs uncovered for an additional 10-15 minutes to caramelize the sauce.
Option 2: Grilled Ribs (with or without smoker):
Preheat the grill: Set up a two-zone fire on your grill with a hot side and a cooler side (indirect heat). Aim for a grill temperature of around 275°F (135°C).
Grill the ribs: Place the ribs on the cooler side of the grill (indirect heat), bone side down. Cover the grill and cook for about 2.5 to 3 hours, maintaining a consistent temperature.
Add barbecue sauce: In the last 30 minutes of cooking, brush the ribs with barbecue sauce and move them to the hotter side of the grill for a few minutes to allow the sauce to caramelize, creating a delicious crust.
4. Rest and serve:
Let the ribs rest for 10 minutes after cooking to allow the juices to redistribute.
Slice between the bones and serve with extra barbecue sauce on the side.
Tips for Tender Ribs:
Low and slow cooking is key to tenderizing the meat. The longer you cook them at a low temperature, the more tender they’ll become.
Wrapping in foil during cooking helps steam the ribs, making them super tender.
Basting with sauce in the final stages creates a nice sticky, caramelized coating without burning the sugars in the sauce.
Serve these tender spareribs with sides like coleslaw, cornbread, or baked beans for a perfect meal!
