Dr. Gina Reacts to The Myth That Red Meat & Cholesterol Are Unhealthy (Shorts)

1977, the USDA said that cholesterol and saturated fat cause heart disease. Stop eating them. So, we really got rid of the fat. We got rid of red meat and eggs because those were the worst, right? Increased high fructose corn syrup by over three times, sweet oils by over three times, fruits and vegetables by 30, 40 percent, grains and all that sort of stuff.
And what happened? The obesity rate tripled, heart disease tripled, stroke rate tripled, cancer rates tripled. Type 2 diabetes, autoimmune disorders, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, developmental delays such as autism all increased exponentially. Now they're the only things we treat.
Even into the early 2000s, I was discharging people from the hospital every day, telling them to avoid fat at all costs, go on a low fat diet and eat ultra processed products. We would give them a list of recommendations that were nothing but grains and seed oils and either high in sugar, or if they were diabetic, terrible artificial sweetener like aspartame.
This is sad and horrifying looking back. We have to do better. This is a myth that still won't die.
