The City of Helen, better known as "Georgia's Alpine Village," and what we like to think of as Bavaria in the Northeast Georgia Mountains. Helen is best known for its annual Oktoberfest festivities, when revelers dress in traditional attire, lederhosen and dirndls, while dancing to the polka and enjoying German food and drinks. With a population of only 531 but over 3 million yearly visitors. town of Helen takes its inspiration from the villages of Germany, complete with the building style of downtown shops and restaurants. Helen was built along the former route of a 1,000-year-old Native American trail connecting Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia. Formerly a logging town in decline, Helen resurrected itself by becoming a replica of a Bavarian alpine town, in the Appalachians instead of the Alps. an Oktoberfest without lots of food, wine, and beer! The festival runs from mid-September to the end of October. A fantastic way to enjoy the beauty of autumn while indulging in German culture.
