SAVED BEYOND BELIEF / Pastor Bob's Coffee Break

Dear Pastor Bob: John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." Some say that ongoing belief in Christ is necessary for Salvation. They say we have to believe day after day to be saved, and not just one time. But is this Biblical? Do we need to have ongoing belief to inherit eternal life? I have asked this question of several Christians, and even some pastors, and they all seem to beat around the bush and give me wishy washy answers. It’s like they are without a clue. I thought pastors especially should know this stuff. So I guess my question is this: Is Salvation based on ongoing belief, or is it based off of a one time decision we make the moment we get saved? I ask this  because many times, we have periods of unbelief. Some even flat out say they no longer believe. Others also are prodigal sons for many years. Are those people forever lost until they return back to belief?

Today's Scripture:
John 3:16
