The Cape Town Kings get taxed by the Pretoria CapitalsMother City Pucker with all the Cape Town Ice Hockey News.
Hey there, Mother City Pucker and Company as always, remember you are the company, and I have got some big news right here from the Goodwood ice rink!
The Cape Town Kings, our reigning Super League Champions and arguably the best ice hockey team on the continent, have hit a bit of a snag in their 2024 title defense.
Let’s break down the action. This morning’s game, on Saturday, 14th September, saw the Kings go head-to-head with one of their toughest challengers thus far—the Pretoria Capitals.
Unfortunately, for us, but obviously fortunately for them the Capitals came out on top with a well-deserved 5-3 victory.
The game was an absolute barnburner, with both teams pushing hard and leaving everything on the ice. The Kings started strong, taking the lead, but the Capitals quickly answered back. The action was end-to-end, with incredible stick-handling, rapid-fire shots, and intense physical play that had fans glued to the edge of their seats.
The Capitals, playing a very young but energetic squad, took everything the Kings threw at them, shook off the hits, and kept coming back for more.
In the final period, discipline became an issue for the Kings. With penalties stacking up, they found themselves with two men in the penalty box, with three men against five on the ice, and even pulling the goalie in the last minute couldn’t turn the tide.
The Capitals, currently leading the 2024 Super League standings, can now boast that they’ve temporarily dethroned the Kings in this crucial part of the tournament.
But let’s be clear—this is far from over. The Kings are a championship team for a reason. They’ve held the Super League title for three plus years running, and their experience, skill, and resilience can never be underestimated.
Sunday night’s game against the Johannesburg Wildcats is a must-watch, as the Kings look to bounce back and climb back into the race for the cup.
Now, here’s an exciting strategy for local fans! Sunday morning, there’s another free game between the Pretoria Capitals and the Johannesburg Wildcats, and if the Wildcats can take down the Capitals, it could give the Kings a much more favorable point scenario.
This is an awesome chance for Cape Town supporters to rally behind the Wildcats and help level the playing field! Plus, morning games are just as hot as the evening ones, so why not make it an unusual Sunday outing? It’s all free, and you can catch some great ice hockey action, followed by a general skating session for the kids and brave adults who want to try their hand at skating. After that, grab brunch at one of the many eateries in the GrandWest Casino and Entertainment Complex—sounds like a perfect Sunday, right?
Here’s what’s coming up for the Kings:
👑 Sunday, 15th September
09:30 – Wildcats vs Capitals (free morning game!)
20:45 – Kings vs Wildcats
👑 Monday, 16th September – 19:00 vs PTA Capitals
