‘Smallpox deaths’ due to the medical treatment, not the disease | Roman Bystrianyk

Roman Bystrianyk (@RBystrianyk), an MD and coauthor of the book Dissolving Illusions, describes for James Delingpole (@JMCDelingpole) how George Washington, the first president of the United States, died due to "medical error."

"George Washington...wasn't killed in battle. He was killed by doctors because he had a cold or the flu, so they started bleeding [him], and then they brought the doctors in," Bystrianyk says. The doctors "gave him mercury to clear out his whole alimentary canal, which for some reason they thought was a great idea [and] also did these blister packs, [and] other things that were horrible. And, so he died of medical error, basically.

"We kind of look at a disease as this microbe that causes a disease, and that's the end of it. Right?
But, there were doctors, including, Thomas Sydenham, 1680s. He was considered the father of English medicine. He said, well smallpox is basically a mild disease if you treat it correctly. There were other doctors throughout the decades that said the same thing. They said, well, it's a mild disease if you don't mismanage it. And what they were doing, the medical procedures of the time, and it varied it from the 1700s into the 1800s, is they, if you had a fever or you had smallpox, they would bleed you and bleed you repeatedly, even if they suspected you had it. But they would also do something called the hot regimen.
They would put you in a confined area without fresh air, no water, and the idea was to kinda, like, sweat it out, essentially...It didn't work very well because people who did that, died quite rapidly. So that wasn't really a great idea. And they also decided to use toxic things like mercury to clean out your whole alimentary canal.

So they bled him more. It ended up bleeding enough to kill him. And they also gave him mercury to clear out his whole alimentary canal, which for some reason they thought was a great idea. They also did these blister packs, other things that were horrible. And, so he died of medical error, basically.

"So you have these three different main things: bleeding people, you had the hot regimen, and then you had, you know, toxic things like mercury, which was a very common medication. You know, I wouldn't call it medication. I'd call it poisoning, but they thought it was medication. And so you get these things altogether, they people would die, especially the hot regimen."
