Glenn Greenwald highlights an increasing trend of government control over online platforms, citing examples from Australia, the EU, and other democratic nations.

“… the only things are going to feel safe to leave up, are the most banal conformist government approved messaging, praising leaders, cheering their policies, cheering their wars, because you’re going to be petrified that anything else might be deemed misinformation by one government or the other.”

Governments are introducing regulations that could impose hefty fines on social media companies failing to control misinformation or illegal content. Australia, for instance, is proposing fines of up to 5% of global revenue, and the EU is formally charging Elon Musk’s X platform.
