Assisted Dying encompasses both physician-assisted dying (where a patient self-administers lethal medication prescribed by a doctor) and voluntary active euthanasia (where a physician administers the lethal drugs). The terminology can be contentious, with terms like "medical aid in dying" or "death with dignity" often preferred over "assisted suicide" due to the implications of the latter.
Legality: In the U.S., several states have legalized some form of assisted dying, including Oregon, Washington, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Vermont, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Maine, and New Mexico. These laws typically require the patient to be terminally ill with a prognosis of six months or less to live, be mentally competent, and able to self-administer the medication.
