I think they can based on my experience.

My husband & I always had (multiple) cats. The batch we had when our older daughter was born were in feline “middle age” (about 7 yrs old) & were indoor only cats. When we brought her home, our oldest cat seemed a bit confused especially when we’d have to get up in the middle of the night. He would make his way into her room & watch as one of us fed her. Eventually, he became curious about the crib & made a complete physical inspection of it. He decided it was very cat-friendly - high enough off the ground with bars he could look out of, a nice mobile to bat at between snoozes & stretches, clean sheets, etc. He eventually settled into sleeping in her crib, way way at the bottom where she couldn’t disturb him. I had no problem with it - he showed no aggression towards her & was content to sleep there. As she got older & more mobile, he would jump out if he thought she would disturb him too much. When she began crawling, he’d tolerate her tail-pulls, sticky fists, clumsy pets. He never swatted her, hissed at her or showed any signs of aggression.

I know the question is about human babies, but my cats are also very attuned to dogs. During the course of their lives, our cats have had to socialize 3 dogs, all of which came as puppies. Again, there was no clawing & a lot of patience. Over the years, we’ve acquired new cats as the old ones passed away & the older ones have been very accepting & tolerant.
