On September 9, 2021 in Georgia, officers set up a sting operation to catch phone scammers who were trying to collect $12k from an elderly couple. The two men were part of a scam that preys on the elderly called a "grandparent scam" in which a scammer calls the victim and claims to be a family member in trouble with the law. The scammer then says they need money for bail or legal bills. In this specific case, the victims agreed to provide $12k. However, before the scammers showed up to collect the cash, the victims became suspicious and notified law enforcement. On the day of the pickup, officers positioned themselves in the nearby area and waited for the scammers to collect the money. This is footage of the events that followed.
