Year of publication 1988 , The film is about a homeless day laborer in Los Angeles who, through special sunglasses, is the only person who can see that the ruling class is dominated by malevolent aliens in human form. Only those who look through the glasses can see that the aliens have conspired with the rich and powerful to manipulate and control humanity by means of subliminal messages in the mass media. Those in power are educating humanity to be non-stop consumer-driven beings without a will of their own, who are supposed to obey and reproduce. In the course of the film, the rebellious protagonist finally succeeds in ensuring that the rest of humanity can also recognize the true identity and intention of those in power. The leading roles are played by the Canadian wrestling star Roddy Piper, who was extremely popular at the time, as John Nada, Keith David as Frank, and Meg Foster as Holly Thompson. Director John Carpenter also wrote the screenplay based on the 1963 short story Eight O'Clock in the Morning by Ray Nelson and also composed the film score. Carpenter saw his film as a critique of the ever-growing commercialization of pop culture and politics in general, and as a critique of then-U.S. President Ronald Reagan's business-friendly economic policies in particular.
The film, which was produced for four million US dollars, was only a moderate commercial success with revenues of around 13.5 million US dollars (adjusted for inflation in 2024: approx. 31 million US dollars) at the North American box office. The reviews were initially mixed with mostly negative tendencies. Film critics criticized above all the social criticism, the screenplay and the acting performances of the film. Over the years, however, the film gained cult status and the reviews eventually turned out to be far more positive. Furthermore, the film is widely referenced in contemporary pop culture. In particular, the mantra-like "OBEY!" ("Obey!") gained worldwide fame through the artistic interpretation of the American street artist Shepard Fairey.

"Los Angeles is infiltrated by aliens who, disguised as rich businessmen, turn the population into consumer idiots by remote hypnosis, until some undaunted idealists defend themselves. Crudely knitted, but tightly staged science fiction thriller with satirical side blows to the American lifestyle; stylistically based on the genre films of the 50s." - Encyclopedia of international film
"The aliens are among us. […] They wear the finest designer clothes, rule in executive floors and media corporations and manipulate humanity with books, magazines and commercials. Their messages [...] drill directly into the subconscious: "Work! Don't think so! Consume!" The bricklayer Nada (Roddy Piper) comes into possession of glasses that make the true shape of the aliens visible. Desperately, he organizes resistance against the invaders, who want to turn the whole world into a huge labor camp... John Carpenter ("The Rattlesnake") tackles an interesting satirical material that soon slips out of his hands. But he has the action under control."

"They Are Alive" is one of John Carpenter's darkest films and has lost none of its bitter irony to this day. In addition to the great cast and the script, you can't help but marvel at Carpenter's vision, which will not only entertain, but often make you think. 9 out of 10 points."

>> Free Speech Under Attack -- A Note from the CEO of Rumble

Dear Rumble Users,

I don't typically send messages to our users through email, but red lines have been crossed. There have been major developments with free speech platforms, and I feel it’s important to let everyone know what is going on and how you can help Rumble.

Rumble is no longer available to the citizens of Brazil, joining the ranks of France, Russia, and China. From media reports, Brazil no longer has Elon Musk's X due to attacks on free speech by Alexandre De Moreas, a justice of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court.

World powers don’t want Rumble, they don’t want X, they don’t want Telegram, and they don't want Truth Social. They want to control information, but our companies won’t let them.

There are no other large companies fighting for freedom like we are. We put everything on the line for it, and the Telegram CEO was recently arrested for it.

Advertisers boycott our companies to try and cut our economic lifeline, but they underestimate our support among the people.

The people keep us alive and keep us going.

If you want to help us, join Rumble Premium. If Rumble Premium gets big enough, you help us change the game and fight for freedom of expression.

We are also offering a $10 dicount for any new annual subscribers when they use the promo code "brazil".

Sincerely,

Chris Pavlovski
Chairman and CEO of Rumble
