Back-to-back school shootings during the opening week of the new year for most students, makes Georgia and Maryland the latest states in more than 20 across the nation to experience school shootings in 2024 – and the first two deadly school shootings in the 24-25 academic school year.
In Georgia, 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at Apalachee High School, opened fire on his fellow students killing four people and injuring nine others.
In Maryland, 16-year-old Jalen Rushawn Prince shot and killed a student in the bathroom of Joppatowne High school.
Both are facing murder charges, and both expected to be tried as adults.

Colt’s father Colin is also facing charges for involuntary manslaughter and 2nd degree murder.
There have been 26 school shootings this year that resulted in 41 injuries and 12 deaths, according to an Education Week analysis.
Last year, there were 38 school shootings and since 2018 a total of 208.
