A Harris County deputy shot a man Thursday afternoon at a gas station on the northwest side, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

The 47-year-old man is expected to survive.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a commotion outside the Shell gas station at the intersection of FM 1960 and Ella Boulevard, Gonzalez said.

A man had been waving a handgun and threatening people at the gas station, prompting multiple calls and complaints to authorities, Assistant Chief Tommy Diaz at a news conference Thursday evening.

Upon arrival, units attempted to make contact with the man who brandished his gun, said Senior Deputy Thomas M. Gilliland in an emailed statement.

The man pointed his handgun at the deputy, who then shot him, Diaz said. The shooting took place at around 2 p.m. inside the gas station.

"We got several calls about this man waving a gun, pointing a gun, engaging with different drivers," said Diaz. "We do want to make sure that if you called in, please call us back so we can take your information and get a statement from you."

There were no reported injuries to any deputies or other civilians, Diaz said.

Only one shot was fired, he said. The man was transported by EMS to a local hospital, Gilliland said, and deputies applied life-saving measures until the EMS arrived. The man had been shot in the hip area.

The 27-year-old deputy has been on the force for five years, Gilliland said.

This man is also wanted in a separate disturbance where he pointed a handgun at a motorist, Gilliland said.
