Malia Obama Stuns at Deauville Film Festival | Debuts Short Film The Heart & Wins Young Spirit Award
On Friday, September 6, Malia Obama made a rare and unforgettable red carpet appearance at the 50th annual Deauville American Film Festival in France. The 26-year-old filmmaker stunned audiences as she proudly presented her directorial debut short film, The Heart.
This festival marks a major milestone in Malia's creative journey. She wasn’t just there to showcase her film—she was also honored with the Young Spirit Award, a new prize created for emerging talents shaping the future of cinema.
In an interview with Paris Match, Malia opened up about her excitement, saying, "I’ve never done anything like this... so of course, I’m a little bit terrified, but mostly just excited." Can you imagine stepping into that spotlight for the first time?
Malia looked effortlessly cool in a mismatched plaid Vivienne Westwood ensemble—layering a blue-and-white skirt with a red-and-black corset-style top. When asked about her bold look, she simply said, "Vivienne Westwood, Queen," adding, “I don’t know as much about fashion, but I’m happy to be wearing it.” The confidence was real!
Let’s talk about the film—The Heart, an 18-minute emotional drama. The film follows the story of a lonely man grieving his mother's death after a heated argument about groceries. What makes this film special is Malia's unique perspective on human emotions, with themes like loneliness, regret, and unexpected tenderness woven throughout.
This wasn’t Malia's first big film moment. Earlier this year, The Heart was featured at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival as part of the U.S. short fiction films showcase. In an interview for the festival, she shared her vision, explaining, “The film is about lost objects, lonely people, and forgiveness. But more importantly, it’s about finding closeness in these things.”
Oh, and did you know? Malia isn’t just a director—she's also an incredible writer! She previously worked as a writer on the Amazon Prime thriller series Swarm, where she impressed showrunner Janine Nabers with her talent and dedication.
From the red carpet to the director’s chair, Malia Obama is proving she’s a creative force to be reckoned with. What do you think of her bold entrance into the film world? Drop your thoughts in the comments below!"
