Rammstein faked the moon landing for "Amerika" on September 6th, 2004

Rammstein formed after the Berlin Wall fell and basically came up with Neue Deutsche Härte ("New German Hardness"). They came to the attention of American audiences after playing festivals with and opening for American nu-metal and rock acts as they toured Europe in the mid to late 90s. Despite the language barrier their incredible showmanship, featuring boundary pushing pyrotechnics and antics, won over the US based bands, their managers and eventually their audiences.

US success proved to be a double edged sword as the hectic touring schedule came close to breaking the band up and at one point saw two of its members arrested for performing an explicit act on stage. This soured them on future tours and probably partially inspired the song “Amerika”.

Fun fact: In something of an inside joke, the video concludes with a close up of band member Richard Z. Kruspe, who winks at the camera as he was, at the time, actually "living in America".
