My Dad Changed Overnight—What Is My Mom Hiding?

I’m really worried about my dad. He hasn’t been himself lately. He hasn’t spoken to me in days, just lies in bed, not moving. My mom’s been crying, always by his side, but she won’t tell me what’s wrong.

Most of the time, I’m not allowed into their room to see him. But he’s my dad, and I miss him.

I asked Mom if I could talk to him, but she said, “Your dad doesn’t feel like talking right now, sweetie. Maybe in a few days.” She tried to smile, but tears were streaming down her face.

I pressed her, “What’s wrong, Mom?”

“Nothing, darling. I just want your dad to be okay.” She hugged me tightly, and I caught a glimpse of Dad through the bedroom door. He looked pale, his eyes wide open, staring blankly.

Later, as Mom read me a bedtime story, I couldn’t focus. I just wanted to know why Dad wasn’t there to say goodnight like he always did. After she tucked me in, I waited until I heard her fall asleep, then crept out of bed and tiptoed to their room.

I leaned over Dad and whispered, “Dad, is everything okay?” A foul smell hit me, and when I lifted the blanket, his arm fell to the floor with a heavy thud.

I don’t think my dad is okay.
