Opening Your Heart to Bhutan, Ep #60

A common theme among the guests of UPThinking Finance™ is that the global economy is derailing, and wealth and inequality are leading us to a day of reckoning. However, this sense is not just about monetary implications—there is a spiritual element as well.

There’s a concern that a personal consciousness or self-awareness is needed to create a global transformation. My guest, Emma Slade, is here to talk about her transformative shift from being a global chartered financial analyst to a Buddhist Monk.

What drew Emma in, and out, of the financial world

After losing her father to brain cancer, Emma became motivated to do work she felt was smart and analytical. She desired to surround herself with fast-moving minds that were smart about the economics that run the world.

After finding enjoyment and a love for knowing how the global financial markets worked, Emma had a change of heart when she experienced a traumatic event—she was held hostage in her hotel room while on a business trip.

Surviving changed her value system and made her question what she wanted to be contributing to the world. She wondered if the work she was doing was truly meaningful.

Becoming a Buddhist and starting her charity

Emma decided to leave the financial markets and visit the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan to meet with a monk. He motivated her to become not just a Buddhist, but a monastic monk. She had to experience training to renounce a worldly life in pursuit of a spiritual one. In her desire to develop wisdom and compassion, she was motivated to start a charity, Opening Your Heart to Bhutan.

Transformation comes from knowing oneself

My observation has been that the materialistic world and the spiritual world have been in conflict and people will soon need to make a choice on which side they're on. However, Emma describes this phenomenon as a personal development.

Emma expresses that everyone has basic materialistic needs. When an individual is content with the primary stage of developmental needs, they can be open to the next, higher stages. This ability to transform from the materialistic into spiritual comes from seeing your own role and purpose in this life. Self development and continually working towards what brings joy and contentment will help cultivate inner peace.
