2018 Interview

A retrovirus is an RNA-based virus that uses reverse transcriptase to convert its RNA into DNA. Once it infects a host, the retrovirus integrates its DNA into the host cell's DNA, allowing it to replicate and spread.

HIV is a well-known retrovirus that can lead to AIDS. Another retrovirus family, xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related viruses (XMRV), may be linked to conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome, myalgic encephalopathy (ME), and possibly autism.

Some retroviruses, including XMRV (but not HIV), can infect germ cells, meaning they can be passed on to offspring.
