**Peer Rokhan (Bayazid Ansari) and the Roshaniyya Movement**
**Peer Rokhan**, also known as **Bayazid Ansari** (1525–1581), was a prominent Pashtun Sufi leader, poet, and philosopher from the region that is now part of Pakistan and Afghanistan. He is best known for founding the **Roshaniyya Movement** (also called the **Roshaniyya Tahreek**), a religious and philosophical movement that flourished in the 16th century. This movement had both spiritual and political dimensions, as it challenged the established religious and political order of the Mughal Empire.
### Key Aspects of the Roshaniyya Movement:
1. **Religious Teachings**:
- Bayazid Ansari introduced a mystical interpretation of Islam that focused on the concept of **divine illumination** (Roshni), which symbolized the enlightenment of the soul.
- He emphasized the importance of self-realization, inner light, and personal connection with God, ideas that were somewhat in contrast to the orthodox interpretations of Islam at the time.
- His book, **Khair-ul-Bayan**, written in Pashto, Persian, and Arabic, serves as the primary text outlining his teachings.
2. **Challenge to Mughal Authority**:
- The Roshaniyya movement quickly gained followers among the Pashtuns, who were unhappy with Mughal rule and were drawn to the ideas of autonomy and spiritual freedom.
- The movement posed a significant threat to Mughal sovereignty in the region, and the Mughal rulers, particularly Akbar and his successors, saw it as a political challenge.
3. **Conflicts and Legacy**:
- The Mughal Empire responded harshly to the Roshaniyya movement. Akbar sent military forces to suppress Bayazid Ansari and his followers, leading to battles in which many were killed.
- Despite its suppression, the movement had a long-lasting impact on Pashtun identity and Sufi thought in the region. Bayazid Ansari is still remembered as **Peer Rokhan** ("Saint of Light"), and his teachings continue to influence certain Sufi circles.
