Multiple lightning-caused fires in Oregon combine to burn 61,000 acres over 2 days, still growing. Fire crews continued to tackle a large lightning-caused wildfire in central Oregon on Wednesday, September 4, as it grew to encompass 96 square miles within two days, according to official fire reports.

Footage captured by Todd McKinley shows active flames from the Rail Ridge fire on forest terrain just south of Dayville on Monday afternoon.

By Wednesday, the Rail Ridge fire burned 61,433 acres and was zero percent contained.

Wind associated with Monday’s lightning storms caused the fire to spread quickly through dry brush and grass, officials said.

According to local reports, several lightning-caused fires combined to become the Rail Ridge fire, including the Powell and Black Canyon fires.
