Palaiochora chania crete
Paleochora is a lovely summer resort, located 80 km southwest of Chania Town. The picturesque village, washed by the Libyan Sea, is rightfully known as the "Nymph of the Libyan Sea" and "Land of the Sun." The mountains surrounding it protect it from strong seasonal north winds and also add to the painting-like charm of the landscape. Beyond those mountains lies the plain of the village.
t is believed that Paleochora was built on the ruins of the ancient city of Kalamydi. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the village experienced rapid growth in the area of tourism when important hotel units were established in the area. It also used to be really popular among the hippies during that time. Nowadays, the inhabitants are mainly involved with tourism and agriculture (mostly tomatoes and olive oil).
Paleochora is situated between two coves, the eastern and the western. On the former lies a nice pebbly beach, along with a lovely harbor from which boats to Sfakia, Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro, Gavdos, and Elafonisi Beach depart. On the latter, a lighthouse can be found. There lies the second beach, a shore with thick sand, attracting thousands of tourists during the summer season. Both beaches in Paleochora are well organized and gifted with refreshing, crystalline waters, which are always protected from the strong winds, making them an ideal place to relax during the summer holidays.
Things to Do and See
There is a variety of activities you can enjoy during your stay in the village. These include surfing, water and jet skiing, sailing, fishing, and hiking. Among the things that captivate every visitor in Paleochora are the beautiful whitewashed little houses dressed in colorful flowers and picturesque alleys. You can also admire some beautiful Byzantine churches and monasteries, as well as museums and historical sites.
During your next trip to Paleochora Village, don’t forget to visit the Venetian Fortress of Selino (Castel Selino), the most prominent monument in the region. It stands at the top of the settlement, on the hill of Fortezza, and was originally built in 1280, during the Venetian period. It’s an impressive monument, definitely worth visiting, that will take you back to the glorious Venetian times. From the hill, you can also enjoy the wonderful view of the village.
