Chad T. Richard is accused of m*rdering award-winning gymnast Kara Welsh

JUST IN: 23-year-old Chad T. Richard is accused of m*rdering award-winning gymnast Kara Welsh just a block away from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Whitewater Police Department says Richard shot Welsh multiple times at an apartment.

"Through investigation, it was determined that leading up to the sh**ting, an altercation had occurred between the two," police said.

It's unclear what exactly their relationship was but police believe they knew each other.

Welsh was starting her senior year at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where she was on the gymnastics team.

Welsh won an individual national title last year.
