Sunny Afternoon (Kinks, The, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-09-01. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Sunny Afternoon," written by Ray Davies, was the Kinks' 5th top 20 hit in the USA landing at the no. 14 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966 and remaining on the chart for 11 weeks (Whitburn, 2013); however, the song topped the UK sales chart and remained in the top 10 for two months (Kutner & Leigh, 2005). "Sunny Afternoon" was the Kinks third and last no. 1 single in the UK (songfacts, 2024); sadly, the Kinks never had a no. 1 hit in the USA. Their hightest charting singles were "Tired of Waiting" (1965) and "Come Dancing" (1983), both stalled at no. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (Whitburn, 2013). Nicky Hopkins played piano on the song (Kutner & Leigh, 2005).

Lyrics:

The tax man's taken all my dough,
And left me in my stately home,
Lazing on a sunny afternoon.
And I can't sail my yacht,
He's taken everything I've got,
All I've got's this sunny afternoon.

Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze.
I got a big fat mama trying to break me.
And I love to live so pleasantly,
Live this life of luxury,
Lazing on a sunny afternoon.
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

My girlfriend's run off with my car,
And gone back to her ma and pa,
Telling tales of drunkenness and cruelty.
Now I'm sitting here,
Sipping at my ice cold beer,
Lazing on a sunny afternoon.

Help me, help me, help me sail away,
Well give me two good reasons why I oughta stay.
Cause I love to live so pleasantly,
Live this life of luxury,
Lazing on a sunny afternoon.
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

Ah, save me, save me, save me from this squeeze.
I got a big fat mama trying to break me.
And I love to live so pleasantly,
Live this life of luxury,
Lazing on a sunny afternoon.
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime
