Protest erupts at California state Capitol because of stalled reparations proposals

Supporters of reparations for descendants of enslaved Black Americans protested inside the California Capitol against the Legislative Black Caucus’ decision not to advance two reparations-related bills, SB 1403 and SB 1331.

SB 1403 aimed to create a state agency to oversee reparations efforts, while SB 1331 proposed establishing a state fund for reparations.

Conflicting statements emerged, with State Sen. Steven Bradford claiming the governor’s office proposed amendments that turned SB 1403 into a study, which he rejected.

Assemblymember Lori Wilson denied the governor’s involvement and said the bills lacked votes, NBC’s KCRA 3 has reported.
