Trucker narrowly escapes fatal crash after scrolling on phone while driving

A truck driver in Wales was filmed swerving off the highway, narrowly missing a group of people standing at the side of the road, because he was ‘looking for a podcast’ on his phone. Dashcam footage from May 2023 shows driver Raymond Catterall distracted by his device, occasionally looking back up at the road. A stationary car can be seen up ahead, with people seemingly waiting for breakdown assistance.

Catterall fails to notice the car, and fails to notice when his truck begins to swerve towards them. The truck crashes through the bushes at the side of the road, narrowly missing the people in his path. He later tried to claim that the car had pulled out in front of him unexpectedly, something the dashcam footage would disprove in court.

Catterall was ultimately sentenced to 8 months in jail suspended, as well as 150 hours of unpaid work and a 12 month driving ban.
