This video and following description documents the process involved in applying for a Criminal Injuries Compensation claim after I was subject to an unlawful assault.

On Sunday 23rd July 2017 at ~1:00am I was a victim of an assault at Perth train station. An aggressive and violent offender committed multiple assaults on various people in the large tunnel that connects the Wellington Street train platforms to the underground train platforms. When he started to assault some youths I decided to step into attempt to stop to assaults and as a result I also was assaulted.

The offender managed to escape before the transit officers arrived on the scene. I made a report with the PTA and WA Police.

PTA Incident Report: AR 23072017 0100 87242
WA Police Incident Report: IR 230717 1750 16287

I was persistent in communicating with the authorities and advocating for myself. The assaults were captured on CCTV and through this the offender was identified, arrested and charged with common assault. I commend the WA Police in their efforts.

On Tuesday 21st November 2017 the matter went before the Perth Magistrates Court and the offender plead guilty and was convicted and ordered by the court to pay the following:

DOJ Number: MC PER 170061036

$1,000.00 compensation
$500.00 fine
$190.85 court costs

A couple of weeks after the matter went before the court I visited Perth Magistrates Court and was informed that the offender had 28 days to pay before fines enforcement proceedings could be started against him. At the time I was also informed that the offender had several other outstanding fines that had not been paid.

After several months had passed I had not heard anything and in June 2018, almost a year since the incident, I visited the Perth Magistrates Court and was told that I should contact the Fines Enforcement Registry about the matter. I did so and I was advised that as the offender had not made any payments I must pursue the matter through Criminal Injuries Compensation.

After speaking to a Criminal Injuries Compensation staff member about the matter I applied for Criminal Injuries Compensation on Wednesday 4th July 2018.

Criminal Injuries Compensation Matter No: CIC 1613/2018

I received a receipt for my application on Tuesday 14th August 2018. On Tuesday 14th January 2020 I received correspondence from Criminal Injuries Compensation and on Wednesday 4th March 2020 I received notification that my Criminal Injuries Compensation claim had been assessed.

My claim for compensation had been assessed as follows:

Injuries: $6,700.00
Damage to personal items: $159.00
TOTAL AMOUNT OF AWARD: $6,859.00

I thank Criminal Injuries Compensation for their efforts.

Through each stage of the lengthy process it took a large amount of self-advocacy to receive the desired results. I feel for vulnerable members of society who are victims of crime who may not have the confidence, persistence and skills to advocate for themselves, and especially victims of more serious crimes who have not received justice.
