My Grail Watch

This video is 14 minutes of close-ups set to music. My whole thing with watches and watchmaking is to do my best to ingest the entire domain: from concepts to mechanics to design, so that I can begin to effortlessly work within it, first in my dreams and then with my hands and tools. Making and editing these videos helps me do that as I become increasingly familiar with the details of each historical design.

When I bought this 1966 hand-skeletonized Universal Genève Cal. 1-66 micro rotor movement for less than US $500 on ricardo it was cased in a soft, worn, gold-plated, stainless steel, C-shaped, Gérald Genta-designed, Universal Genève Gilt Shadow case. Unfortunately that case was designed without a crown tube and therefore was not waterproof. I recased the movement in this more conventional, fully gasketed, waterproof, stainless steel, White Shadow case and it instantly became my favorite watch.

The White Shadow case came with a very similar movement without skeletonization. My plan is to eventually skeletonize that movement myself and then return this movement to the Gilt Shadow case that it was in when I bought it.

I think it will likely be several years before I have the skills to be able to do that, but who knows? As my friend Bob says, "Step by step!"

Both watches cost less than US$500.
