This 8 part weekly musical documentary series tells the story of the legendary musical figures who rose out of the state over the years from the territorial days right up to today's vibrant musical scene.

This first video in the series presents stories from Minnesota during 1857 through the rise of Judy Garland as an international superstar
Tonight's episode highlights:

MAZOURKA AND FLETCHER HALL

In 1857 Minneapolis hosted a concert featuring world renowned Norwegian violinist Ole Bull and the greatest European soprano of her time 13 year old Adelina Patti.

Bull eventually adopted the state of Minnesota as a second home and there is a statue of him that can still be visited today in Loring Park

DIXIE'S STAR ROSE IN THE NORTH

Composer Dan Emmett actually started composing what would become the song I wish I was in Dixie on his brothers porch in St Paul. He premiered it at St Paul's Ingersoll Hall.

SOUSA'S MINNESOTA MARCH

The University of Minnesota commissioned John Phillip Sousa to write a march. It was premiered at the grandstand of the Minnesota State Fair in 1927 to a crowd of over 12,000. He was amazed when the University's president snubbed the event and refused to attend.
