Passing the Mantle

It’s common in English to speak of ‘taking on someone’s mantle’ after they die or move on. The expression goes back to the story of Elijah’s last day on earth when his apprentice, Elisha, puts on the mantle his master was wearing, thus taking on his Elijah’s role and responsibilities. It’s a powerful way to think about the death or departure of a mentor and the transition we need to go through if we are to properly grieve them and see their work continue.
