The reading is 1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14, introducing Solomon as a king of Israel. Solomon is depicted as praying for wisdom, and God promises him wisdom. Even so, some of the decisions he makes don't seem very wise. According to the Hebrew text, the multiple foreign women Solomon marries import their own religious practices, and Solomon himself ends up burning incense at the 'high places'! He builds a great temple to God, yet he does so through the forced labour of the people of the north, thus sowing the seeds for the rebellion that happens after his death. Like his father, he appears to he a morally ambiguous figure.

John Father Dave, Father Mark and Rob as they discuss this chapter in the history of Israel. What does it have to teach us about human frailty and the volatility of families. More importantly, what does it have to teach us about God?
