Tea Dance Where the Buffalo Roam

A unique view of the traditional Dene Tha' tea dance recorded in the vast, empty plains of northern Alberta, home to many wild bison.

This is where my wife spent her early childhood until the area became flooded and her band had to move to a new location called Chateh (formerly "Assumption"). Since then, the annual celebration called "Habay Days" began to be held to keep the memory of the place and their traditions alive. For anyone thinking of visiting to see for themselves, be aware that non-band members are not permitted to use the area where you see people camping in this video.

The area is still prone to flooding. In fact, only two years before this video, the places you see people camping were under 6 feet of water. Hard to believe things can change so fast, but it's true; you can still see the recent high water marks on the willows.
