Vegetable oil initially started as a by-product of Procter & Gamble’s soap-making process and was once considered "toxic waste." However, the company soon discovered they could profit by hydrogenating cottonseed oil and marketing it as cooking oil. Before long, other hydrogenated oils like canola, soybean, and sunflower oils also made their way to store shelves.
