In this video we look at Escadaria Selarón or Selaróns Staircase. A labor of love and an impressive piece of modern art located at the heart of Rio de Janeiro in the Lapa neighborhood.

This video was mostly shot in December of 2020 in Rio de Janeiro although some of the images were taken in September - November as I lived only a few blocks from this attraction and once I read the full story on it, I thought it really deserved my attention.

This video will briefly tell you about the artist responsible for creating the stairs, Jorge Selarón, a Chilean artist who fell in love with Rio de Janeiro and after a life of travel made it his home. After working on the staircase for years it was only finally completed on the day of his tragic death.

Escadaria Selarón was a gift from Jorge to the Brazilian people and a way he was able to give back to his community that he loved so dearly. I hope you enjoy the photos and videos of the area and if you find yourself in Rio de Janeiro you take some time to visit this now iconic attraction. Even if you don't enjoy modern art you really have to appreciate how a single man changed not one but 2 neighborhoods and helped revitalize pride in his community.

Escadaria Selarón has been featured on National Geographic Channel, by Time and Playboy as well as appeared in advertisements for Coca-Cola and Kellog's Corn Flakes. It has appeared in music videos by Snoop Dogg and U2 and was featured in the reality show "The Amazing Race".

It does not take long to visit Escadaria Selarón if you are in Rio but the story behind them and the man who created them really makes them meaningful. There is no ideal time to visit to avoid crowds. Sometimes the stairs are busy in the early mornings and all day long while other days they only get typical foot traffic from residents heading back and forth between Santa Teresa and Lapa. You just need to look down the street and see if it's busy if you want to go.
