The Gerber Flatiron looks cool but it’s certainly not the highest quality pocketknife in my collection. It has a full laundry list of defects and build quality issues. But let’s start at the beginning. The Flatiron comes in a brown Gerber box - zip-tied to this piece of cardboard for an unknown reason, because it is also clipped to it… but whatever. Even though it was not the smoothest unboxing experience I ever had I could still snag it.

And the real trouble hit me later anyway… As the Gerber Flatiron had the clunkiest action I’ve ever seen. And I’m not saying this because flicking it open was impossible. I’m saying this because it is still a pain to open even after I poured a generous amount of pivot lube all over it. And the most concerning part about this cleaver is that the detent is simply not working.

After this unboxing, I talked to some friends who also have this knife, and they confirmed that their Flatirons also come with the very same wonky action. To increase my disappointment this Gerber knife also has a useless pocket clip and some tilted body screws that make any repairs completely impossible.
