More than 200 firefighters have been deployed in East London's Dagenham to put out a fire at a tower block in the early hours of Monday morning (August 26).

The London Fire Brigade said they received a call at 0244 local time (0144GMT) and rushed to the scene within 5 minutes.

Speaking at the scene of the tower block fire Patrick Goulbourne, London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner, said two people were hospitalized and that the mixed use building had been evacuated but the search and rescue operation was ongoing on Monday morning.

The fire was producing a lot of smoke and Goulbourne said they advised residents to keep their windows closed and visitors to avoid the area.

The cause of the fire which has been declared a major incident is unknown Goulbourne said.
Two people have been taken to hospital and more than 100 residents evacuated after a fire in a building partly used as a block of flats in east London.
