🚨 No Man Takes What's Mine! A Picture To Remember From Warner Bros. Monumental Best-Seller! ( 'The Fountainhead ' by Ayn Rand) Towering Screen Triumph! The great bestseller made greater on the screen by Warner Bros.
📽 The Fountainhead •1949 (Drama/Romance) Approved •🕞1h 54m
🌟 Stars: Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal, Raymond Massey • 🎬Director: King Vidor • 📝Writer: Ayn Rand
——• 👀 Plot:
An uncompromising, visionary architect struggles to maintain his integrity and individualism despite personal, professional, and economic pressures to conform to popular standards. Individualistic and idealistic architect Howard Roark was expelled from college because his designs failed to fit with existing architectural thinking. He seems unemployable but finally lands a job with like-minded Henry Cameron, however within a few years Cameron drinks himself to death, warning Roark that the same fate awaits unless he compromises his ideals. Roark is determined to retain his artistic integrity at all costs
——• 💡 Trivia:
▸ King Vidor originally hoped to cast Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in the lead roles, but Ayn Rand insisted on Gary Cooper in the lead. Bacall was cast opposite Cooper but dropped out before filming began. Hoping the film would make her a star, Warner Bros cast a relative unknown, 22-year-old Patricia Neal, after considering and then rejecting Bette Davis, Ida Lupino, Alexis Smith, and Barbara Stanwyck as replacements for Bacall. Cooper objected to Neal being cast, but during filming, Cooper and Neal began an affair.
▸ Warner Bros. approached Frank Lloyd Wright (who had been the inspiration for Ayn Rand's character, Howard Roark) and asked him to submit some architectural designs to be used in the film. However, the studio balked when Wright requested his usual fee of $250,000, and decided instead to leave the designs to the film's art director, Edward Carrere.
▸ Ayn Rand was furious that Roark's courtroom speech was edited down for time and, as a result, refused to allow for a film adaptation of "Atlas Shrugged" during her lifetime.
▸ The window view from Henry Cameron and Howard Roark's office appears to place the office in the Hudson Terminal office building, which later would become the site of New York's World Trade Center.
▸ Roark's (Gary Cooper) courtroom speech (at 🕞 1:38:05 ) was the longest in film history up until that time.

➤ 'Ayn Rand's Triumph' by harry-7623 March 1999
"The Fountainhead" is a miracle. That it was ever brought to the screen at all seems remarkable. For it is a philosophical novel turned screenplay by the great Ayn Rand herself. This 20th-century giant nobly embodied her philosophy in this, one of her most accessible works. While "Atlas Shrugged" is more extensive and sprawling, "The Fountainhead" is more concise and pointed. And what a philosophy! It is my feeling that Rand's stature will grow with each passing year (she is already included in standard Philosophy I college courses) and this film presents a wonderfully conceived dramatic vehicle for her revelational concepts. The cast is uniformly excellent, with Raymond Massey and Patricia Neal standing out. Gary Cooper acquits himself just fine as Rand's hero, King Vidor's direction is powerful and eloquent, and Max Steiner's score is broad and majestic. The beautiful black-and-white photography and angular sets wrap up this fine presentation. A brilliantly executed production on a mind-bendingly pertinent subject.
