A school district in Texas has enacted a new policy that says teachers are required to refer to students by the pronouns that match their biological sex.
The Keller Independent School District's say that regardless if the student wants to use different pronouns, educators must use the pronouns consistent with the student's birth certificate.
Under the revision approved by the school board, parents will also be notified if a student wants to use a name or pronoun different from what is consistent with their birth certificate.
However, if a student wants to use a different name or pronoun, they can, if their parents provide a written notification to the school.
Last year, Katy ISD in Texas adopted a similar policy requiring parental notification.
Some Republican-led states have moved to pass parental rights legislation requiring that parents be notified if their child wants to use a different name or pronoun.
