Hurricane Hone is gradually moving away from Hawaii’s Big Island, but it continues to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the area, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm, now a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 85 mph, was located about 100 miles southwest of Kailua-Kona on Sunday afternoon.

Residents are under a tropical storm warning, with expected rainfall of 6 to 12 inches, potentially leading to flooding and dangerous surf.

Flash flood warnings are in effect for much of the island, and power outages have affected over 24,000 customers, NBC News has reported.
