Judah and His Sons: Judah marries a Canaanite woman and has three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. Er, Judah's firstborn, marries Tamar. However, Er is wicked in God's sight, and God puts him to death.

Onan's Duty: According to the custom of levirate marriage, Onan, Judah's second son, is supposed to marry Tamar and provide offspring for his deceased brother Er. Onan, however, refuses to fulfill this duty properly. Whenever he sleeps with Tamar, he prevents conception by spilling his semen on the ground. God finds this act displeasing and takes Onan's life as well.

Judah and Tamar: Judah tells Tamar to live as a widow in her father's house until his youngest son, Shelah, is old enough to marry her. However, Judah does not intend to give Shelah to Tamar, fearing he might die too, as his brothers did.

Tamar's Deception: After a period of mourning for Judah’s wife, Tamar hears that Judah is going to Timnah to shear his sheep. She disguises herself as a prostitute, covers her face, and waits for him by the roadside. Judah, not recognizing her as his daughter-in-law, propositions her, and they agree on a young goat as payment. As a pledge, Judah gives her his seal, cord, and staff.

Consequences: Tamar becomes pregnant by Judah. When Judah learns that Tamar is pregnant, he orders her to be burned for immorality. However, Tamar sends Judah his seal, cord, and staff, revealing that he is the father. Judah acknowledges his wrongdoing, saying, "She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah."

The Birth of Perez and Zerah: Tamar gives birth to twins, Perez and Zerah. During the birth, Zerah's hand emerges first, and a scarlet thread is tied around it to mark him as the firstborn. However, Perez is born first, followed by Zerah.

This story highlights themes of justice, deception, and the continuation of lineage, which are significant in the broader narrative of the Bible.
