On August 21, 2024, an Israeli drone strike killed Khalil Maqdah, a leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. Maqdah was killed in the city of Saida, which is situated on the southern coast of Lebanon.

Several hours after the killing, Dimitri Lascaris and Lebanese journalist Hadi Hoteit visited the site of Maqdah's assassination and reported from the scene.

From there, Lascaris and Hoteit drove inland toward the border between Lebanon and Israel. Along the way, they stopped for a cup of tea on the northern bank of the Litani River. As children from nearby villages played in the river on a hot summer's day, Israeli warplanes carried out several airstrikes in their vicinity.
