The recording was made on November 11, 2014 by an Airbus Cougar AS-532 helicopter of the Navy during a coastal overflight between Viña del Mar and San Antonio, and the release of the recording was known through a publication by The Huffington Post.

On board were the pilot of the aircraft, a Navy captain with many years of flight experience, and a technician who was testing an infrared camera used in surveillance and reconnaissance work.

The helicopter was flying at about 1,300 meters high. At 1:52 p.m., and while recording the terrain, the technician observed a strange object flying to the left of the aircraft and over the ocean.

The pilot also observed the object and noticed that it seemed to fly at the same speed and altitude as the helicopter. The technician pointed the camera at the object and zoomed in with the infrared for better clarity.

Shortly afterward the pilot contacted two radar stations, one close by on the coast and another in Santiago, to report the presence of an unknown craft.

Neither station was able to detect the object on radar, although they did detect the helicopter.

The onboard radar was also unable to detect the object.

The pilot tried several times to communicate by radio with the presumed aircraft, and received no response.

The technician recorded the object for nine minutes and twelve seconds, mainly in infrared (IR). This sensor produces a black and white video in which the black, white and grey tones are directly related to temperature. IR detects heat, and the hotter the material being filmed, the darker it appears in the image.

The officers stopped recording when they had to return to their base and the object, as they reported, disappeared behind the clouds.

The Navy immediately sent the images to CEFAA, the agency that took charge of the investigation of the incident.

The agency - explains the media - has committees of military, technical and academic experts from many disciplines. None of them has been able to explain what the flying object captured on the recording is.
The agency, continues The Huffington Post, makes public the cases it investigates once it completes its investigation and recognizes the existence of a UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon) when there is such a conclusion.

The outlet quotes General Ricardo Bermúdez, director of CEFAA, as saying regarding the case: “We don’t know what it was, but we know what it wasn’t.”

Air traffic controllers confirmed that no air traffic had been reported in the area, whether civilian or military, and that there were no aircraft authorized to fly in that airspace.
Bermúdez described the officers who witnessed the incident as “highly trained professionals with many years of experience” who could not explain what they had seen.

The Navy pilot stated in a written report that the object was a “flat and elongated structure” with “two thermal foci like discharges that did not coincide with the axis of movement.” The technician also described the object as having “a semi-oval shape.”
The CEFAA investigation also notes that the technician described the object as having discharged some type of gas or liquid with a high thermal reaction on two occasions.
In a statement, CEFAA said that during the investigation, some (foreign) analysts suggested the hypothesis that it was a medium-sized airliner and that the trails of the element that was released could be the reserve water inside the aircraft, thrown out by the crew. However, meteorology says that neither the altitude at which the object was travelling nor the ambient temperature at that time allowed for such a type of condensation trail.

Furthermore, if it was an aircraft, it would have been seen by radar and would probably have responded to the communications attempted by the helicopter crew.
This was recorded in the recording (minute 8), where the ejection of a plume of hot material can be seen behind the object as it moves away. The trail then mixed with the clouds.

"The Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena, composed of prominent scientists, analysts and aeronautical technicians, after an extensive study of the case, agreed to classify it as UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon)," the organization said in its statement.
