Navigating Customs: Importing Controlled Drugs via Air Courier Services

In this video, we discuss whether ISF filings are required for goods transported via international air courier services with controlled drugs. We first explain what Importer Security Filing (ISF) is and its purpose in providing greater security and visibility into imported cargo. We then address the complexity surrounding controlled drugs, which are regulated substances with specific permits, licenses, and compliance requirements. While ISF filings are primarily necessary for ocean vessel shipments, the CBP has exceptions outlined in the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) system. For goods transported via international air courier services, ISF filings are not required. However, it is crucial to remain fully compliant with all relevant laws, regulations, permits, and licenses, particularly those set by the DEA for controlled substances.
