Some experts suggest that the two-party system could be blamed for the political polarization we find in America. More Americans are growing discontent with the system. A study in 2022 found that nearly 4 in 10 Americans wished for more political parties to choose from.

"It's a two-party system and you have to pick one side or the other," said Lee Drutman, a senior fellow at New America. "If we are in a situation in which one party believes that the other party winning the election would be so disastrous to the country that maybe we should intervene to prevent the other party from winning, then you don't really have a democracy anymore." So should the U.S. consider moving on from a two-party system and what kind of changes would it bring?

Two party systems are not an idea, they are an outcome. Literally one of the first things taught in intro-level political science classes* is a demonstration of how an idealized, first-past-the-post voting system leads to only two parties being viable, because additional parties can only act as spoilers; they only pull votes from the candidates more aligned with their views, strengthening the other. If you have a far-right candidate run alongside a moderate Republican and moderate Democrat, the Democrat captures all votes to the left while the Republican and the extreme Republican split the votes (very simplified, assumes one axis, etc.)

Additionally, when you talk about people not being represented in their district, you're ignoring that at that level primary elections have a large factor in who can win, which results in a degree of choice of which Republican or Democrat you vote for.

You're not necessarily wrong in your conclusions that two party systems have a lot of bad outcomes, but you've missed the point by treating them like something that's created or decided on by e.g. the Ds and the Rs leadership, rather than an outcome of the voting system we function under. *Yes It's Literally PoliSci 101.

The question that pops into my head now is this… who really hates America the most? The party of “bleeding heart progressives” who, at times, seem tiresome and pandering? Or the party openly praising genocidal fascist dictatorships and being proud of it because “at least they’re not Democrats”? You tell me.

If America is a democracy, why do many Americans hate Democrats?
America is not a strict democracy- it is a democratic republic. We vote on leaders to make decisions and pass laws. Democrats have gotten a bad rap lately because the party took a hard left turn sometime around 2015. A true Democrat has been disenfranchised by this new guard and has become more of a centrist. The Democrats that are loathed by most Americans are actually hard leftists and globalists who do not espouse the values of the general public and are trying to push ideas that are harmful to the country. They are not liked by the American public because they are not representative of how the government should function. A true democrat can have a reasonable discussion with an opposing viewpoint. This new leftist crowd is thirsty for power at al costs and is responsible for the dramatic reductions in our freedoms of speech over the past year. We don’t like our freedoms being trampled on, so we dislike these people and their philosophies.

Why do people dislike Democrats?
Democrats do not accept accountability for their own actions. This is the reason why democrats are fleeing places like California and New York. They vote for socialism, then once they get a taste of it, they don’t want it, and then move to more tax and business friendly states like Texas and Florida. Democrats cannot accept others living their lives free and independent, exercising their right to own a gun, believe in God, say Merry Christmas and Happy Independence Day…etc. Have you ever seen a bunch of people so sexually confused while thinking there are 26 genders than the democratic party? Democrats don’t like people who practice their faith in God, because God represents a higher power and authority than the state, and to a socialist there can be no other higher power other than the state. People don’t like democrats because they would rather tear down statues, burn and loot private property, kneel whenever the National Anthem plays, beat innocent people up in the streets, and trash the United States instead of waive the flag and celebrate freedom and liberty, and a little live and let live. Democrats have no appreciation for what it took to create the United States of America, and pretend to re-write history with their pathetic 1619 project. They are taught in public schools to hate their country and how it is soooo racist, yet, when they get to be adults they never renounce their US citizenship and leave for a better country other than the US (because they know there isn’t one), and so they decide to stay in what they call a racist country. If the US is soooo racist, why are thousands of people risking their lives trying to come here? It was the democratic party in the South who wanted slavery to continue. It was the democrats in the Southern state legislatures who authored the Jim Crow laws, it was the democrats who were proclaiming “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever”, it was President Wilson, democrat, who supported the KKK. Bottom line is democrats are insecure and paranoid people who cannot handle reality of living in their own skin, and their favorite weapon of defense is projection, and boy do you see it here in some people’s responses. Why do people dislike Democrats?

Why do you hate democrats and how terrible are they for you?
They love to control and brainwash people. I remember when the Democrats took control of the House and Senate during COVID, those were some of the worst years America has ever seen; lockdowns, mask mandates every where and vaccine mandates at work and schools. No one has a right to tell you to get a medical procedure against your will!! I was forced to get the covid vaccine or I would lose my job; the jab almost killed me (no joke) and I quit my job when I was forced to get another jab. Democrats are the party of hypocrisy. Look at history. The Southerns during the civil war (who were democrats) fought to keep their slaves. Lincoln who was a Republican freed the slaves. Democrats fought to keep segregation in this country. A democrat shot and killed MLK. The democrats founded the KKK; they claim to love all races but they are hypocrites. They want an open border while illegals flood our country and drain our resources at the tax payers dollars; we have a huge homeless population crisis in this country as it is. They hate America and constantly bash it; they are in favor of socialism and communism and are trying to steer our country in that direction. They think it is okay for children to get sex change operations without parental consent and force their WOKE agenda down peoples’ throats with books and tv and cartoons and confusing children as well. Are Democrats anti-American?
As an elderly southern white male, I have watched the ebb and flow of the American political discourse for well over half a century. I was fortunate enough to have acquired a college degree and to have served my country in the Armed Forces. I have watched politicians attempt to define this nation in terms that benefit certain demographic elements of our society while condemning other members to a permanent lower class status.

I have watched Jesse Helms, George Wallace, and Strom Thurmond, along with countless others, poison our public dialogue by relegating certain minority groups to second class citizenship. I have watched women dedicate themselves to breaking the glass ceiling that has oppressed them for years only to have a reactionary Supreme Court erase much of their progress with a single ruling. The LGBTQ community has made huge progress in recent years, but that progress seems to be very much in jeopardy. Voting Rights have been eroded under this conservative agenda and the gerrymandering of legislative districts has become common place. All across the political spectrum, minority rights are unraveling.

What I do not understand is how the right has been able to convince a huge percentage of the population that the truth is a lie and a lie is the truth. Even though almost every reputable Republican testifying before the January 6 House Committee has admitted that the ‘Big Lie’ concerning the stealing of the 2020 election is just that, a lie, most Republicans still chose to believe the fabrication hatched by Donald Trump that the election was stolen. It was not stolen. TRUMP LOST.

The nefarious manner in which Mitch McConnell has abused his power as a Senate leader has now given us a Court that is at best scorned and discredited. What was supposed to be the insurer of individual rights has now become a tool to erase the social progress of the last 70 years.

I am tired of trying to discuss issues with individuals who simply ignore the truth and accept as gospel whatever tripe Donald Trump, a man renowned as a liar and a conman, spews forth as public dialogue. Both Donald Trump and Joe Biden have been public figures for the last half century. Biden has earned the respect of individuals on both the right and the left and has generally been applauded for his integrity and service to the nation. Trump on the other hand has been recognized as a failed businessman whose bombastic nature made him a TV personality of dubious repute. It was only after Trump became President that he achieved anything close to respectability as a statesman, and most of that respectability is self generated. How we, the American people, have fallen for this comedic sideshow is a mystery historians will be examining for years. How did we allow a known conman to discredit a statesman respected by both sides of the aisle for over 50 years simply by insinuating that Mr. Biden is now incompetent?

The Evangelical movement in this country has become an international joke. While I am an atheist, I do remember the passage in the Bible that states that “it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to pass through the gates of heaven”. The Evangelical movement in this country is rife with misconduct and greed. So called Ministers living in multimillion dollar homes and driving exotic vehicles the average person can only dream of. If your God advocates that needy individuals should send wealthy TV Evangelists part of their income in order to serve God, then I have deep concerns about the messengers of your faith.

I could easily list the programs our government needs addressing:

Universal Healthcare
Government sponsored daycare
Free educational opportunities without crippling student debt
School lunch program for all children regardless of family income
Recognize a woman's right to make whatever decisions she feels best for her mental, maternal and reproductive health.
Allow all Americans the right to live whatever sexual orientation that they chose and receive all protections, rights, and privileges guaranteed to heterosexual individuals under the law.
Establish reasonable and sane gun laws that protect the majority of our citizenry.
Regulate Wall Street and business enterprises with unbiased and meaningful legislation that is administered fairly.
The irritating part of the right wing agenda is the fact that their political targets are obvious. The worrisome part is the fact that the very people who support much of this agenda are the people hurt the worse by it. It is time that middle class America, what remains of it that is, recognizes that the American Dream is nothing but a dream. The wealthy in this country are not going to allow you to join their ranks. There are no castles or mansions waiting for you beyond the pearly gates. You have a small but powerful confluence of rich individuals who want total control at your expense, and they have learned that they can accomplish this goal by deceiving you into believing that you are one of them. Believe me, the rich see you as disposable political and economic fodder that can be discarded when used up. They only understand strength, and strength lies in the middle class organizing and demanding an equal share of this country's wealth and bounty.

Why are Democrats so hateful if you disagree with them?
Because they’re human and humans don’t like people who aggressively disagree with them.

I say this as someone who is very far to the left politically and who also supports Israel in its war against Hamas. This is not a popular opinion with many of my friends.

Most of us respect each other as people enough that we can agree to disagree about this one issue and remain friends. One friend got so angry and yelled at me so much that I told him not to contact me anymore and blocked him. He’s also an addict and frankly I’m not bothered about losing him as a friend.

Treat people with respect. Let them know you honor their opinions and their right to disagree with you. And then discuss the issue. You’ll learn what they’re thinking and they’ll learn what you’re thinking. Maybe a mind or two will be opened this way, and you’ll have the respect and friendship of people with different opinions than yours.

And let the crazies go. You’re better off without them until they deal with their own demons.

Why do Democrats always get offended when they are told basic facts?

Over the last fifty years, every Republican President has seen a recession, while we have had only one recession begin under a Democrat, a short six month recession under Carter.
Over the last forty years every Republican President has created a deficit at least double the previous record. Over that same time, every Democratic President (including already Biden) has cut the deficit by half or more.
The last three Democratic Presidents (including Biden) have all seen unemployment effectively cut in half. The last two Republicans both saw it effectively double.
Over the last fifty years, despite holding the Presidency for only 22 years compared to Republicans holding it 28, stock market return has been just over 100% under Republicans and just shy of 1,000% under Democrats. Over 42 million jobs have been created under Democrats compared to only 24 million under Republicans. Income growth averaged 2.2% under Democrats compared to 0.6% under Republicans. GDP growth averaged 4.1% under Democrats compared to 2.7% under Republicans

Convincing people they are victims.
Taking exceptions and selling them as bigger issues than they really are.
Claim others that don’t completely share their ideas are flawed people, or racist, or suffering from some ism.
Rarely looking at their own party’s actions.
Believing they are free of flaws simply because they’re Democrats.
Claiming others are anti-science when they feel it advances their agenda, but rarely examine or recognize they select which ideas to support, believe, and advance, and ignore the science that counters their agenda.

Are Democrats insane or just evil?
So I used to think all the memes and jokes about “liberal left loonies” just that memes and jokes. Until one moved into my building. Now mind you there are 3 apts in my building and the lady upstairs and I have been in this building for over 5 years each (me 7 her 6) and just this past year a new person moved into the front apt. Now me and the lady upstairs both have Trump signs on our stuff, and her and I have had many conversations about the state our country is in, and why over half the country voted for this crap show. So the first thing the new lady in our building does is put a Bernie Sanders sign in her window (no biggie right) me and the lady upstairs kind of sniggered about it and went on our way. But oh boy were we in for an eye opener. So she immediately moves her boyfriend in. Now mind you this is government housing and they are very strict about people staying with you that are not on the lease, it is a big no-no. But no big deal it's her housing in jeopardy not mine, but then the knock down drag out fights started and I'm having to call the police due to domestics (she's screaming for help and whatnot). This leads to him aggressively getting in my face and calling me a cop calling bitch and sticking a ten inch black dildo with a suction cup to my car windshield. Then to top it all off the other day I was sitting in my apt minding my own business when I hear a knock on the door, I go answer it and it's the chick from the front apt and she says, “ you want to kill me don't you” I just kind of stood there for a moment totally flabbergasted then said “not particularly no" she then told me “well, you've got all this Trump stuff up so I know you want to kill me and if you don't take it down, I'm gonna do you the favor and kill myself. “ I told her “if that's what makes you happy go for it but I'm an American with 1st amendment rights and I ain't taking down shit.” Then slammed the door in her face and came back in to finish watching my show. About 30 minutes go by and, knock, knock, knock, guess who it is? I open the door and she says “I know you want to kill me all you Trump people are the same, but I mean it if you don't take down your hateful, repressive signs I'm going to kill myself.” I said “do whatever you think you must but get off my doorstep!” And slammed the door once again. This time I called the landlord and informed them what was going on and that I was calling the police cause she had now threatened suicide twice and I wasn't playing around with her and her bs. I then called the police, and by God if she didnt knock a third time. I opened the door informed her I was on the phone to the police and she quick scurried back to her hole. The police came talked to me, then talked to her then came back and told me to just not interact with her if at all possible, and I told them it was kind of hard when it was her knocking on my door not the other way around. He was entirely sympathetic and just said to do the best I could that she's one of the special people in this town. Whatever that means. So about 2 weeks go by and by God she knocks at my door again this time I don't answer it, I just ignore her so she goes away. But oh no, my intrepid reader that was not the last of her she came 2 more times, and I finally reported her to my local housing authority that has gotten her to stop. At least its been 6 months and she hasn't come back, but I've had to call the cops 2 more times because of domestics both times they drug him off to jail and she let him right back in when he got out. I have now determined no matter how long and loud she screams I'm not calling the police this is very obviously what she wants. Don't even get me started on the drug trafficking going on out of that apt, people coming and going all hours of the day and night, people pulling up to the house he gets in the vehicle for 5-10 mins then gets out, once again at all hours of the day and night. So I don't know about evil, but definitely lunatics of the first order.

Why do Democrats and liberals hate America and the United States so much?

If you define the US as a country that gives primacy to people to the degree that they are native-born citizens, White, a certain flavor of Christian, male, cis-gender, and heterosexual, with deeply reactionary, not conservative, hierarchical, authoritarian, conformist, militaristic, and isolationist views, then you might not be wrong.

We want a country that abides by the Enlightenment values embodied in the Constitution, which include:

Equal value in all humans, regardless of race, religion, and in the modern world, sex, gender, and sexuality.
Equal rights for all humans, etc. etc.
Acceptance that no one political party or views will have a monopoly on good ideas or on being correct.
Rule of law rather than of men or of party.
Equal justice for all, and equal opportunity for all.
Control of governance resting in the hands of the majority, but without allowing anyone to oppress or be oppressed.
Continuous effort to improve the government, the laws, and the economics, to provide more liberty AND more economic and social mobility for all.
Clear-eyed look at facts, seeing what is, rather than what we wish reality were.
Much of that, when put into action, offends the heck out of those who prefer hierarchy, even if they’re embedded in the bottom layers of it. The emotional security of knowing your place, and believing that someone will make all the problems go away, without causing you to have to work at it, is a deeply felt need in many people.

That “someone will fix it for us” need is how populists work. ON all sides of the political spectrum.

The need to know what is expected in all situations in order to feel secure is a popular one in all times and places, too. It drives the conformist movements on both sides of the spectrum.

WHO HATES AMERICA? When was the last time anyone heard Trump call any American leader “strong”? He only calls authoritarian leaders that because it's not America he loves, it's dictatorships where people like Putin rule, unopposed and unfettered by little annoyances like “democracy”, and “honest elections”. It's not democrats who hate Americans. Put Trump back in the Oval office and you will see soon enough how much he DESPISES every guiding principle of democracy that we mostly live by in this country. But only Justin Amash in the House, and only Mitt Romney in the Senate, were prepared to put the demands of patriotism and country above the demands of party.

And then, on January 6, we saw more than a hundred Republican Representatives and a dozen Republican Senators try to overthrow the will of the American electorate, even as a bloodthirsty crowd threatened violence. And the Republican Party has set its countenance firmly against bringing the perpetrators of either of those crimes to justice.

For the last two years, Republicans in the House have done everything they could to block the investigation into January 6, starting with trying to sabotage it by seating Congressmen Jordan and Banks on the Select Committee. Everybody involved knew that it would have been their role to hinder and delay the inquiry, and to make a mockery of any public hearings.

And now, as revenge for not seating them, McCarthy has refused to seat some very effective Democrats on the committees they once attended, and has allowed Jordan to chair the new Select Subcommittee for Weaponization of the Federal Government. Where he has demonstrated just what a mockery he would have made of the J6 Select Committee’s hearings.

And have the Republicans in Congress risen up to rebuke McCarthy, Jordan, Banks and Greene?
